The Muslim community in Katanning originated from the Cocoa Islands and Christmas Island.
They arrived in Katanning in 1974, settling in the town and establishing a strong presence.
The Katanning Mosque was built in 1980, and in 1981, it was officially opened by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia.
